Knitting Needle Conversion Chart

We stock a large range of knitting needles and crochet hooks together with patterns and accessories such as stitch counters, stitch holders, counters and sewing needles.

Generally the pattern or the ball band of the yarns will indicate the size of hook or needle needed but if you are unsure our knowledgeable staff can help.

Knitting Needle Types:

Straight needles: used for most basic knitting projects to create a flat piece. They are generally available in various lengths so choose the length that will allow you to keep all the stitches on your needles without bunching.

Circular needles:  are used to knit items without seams. Jumper bodies, hats and socks are just some uses for circular needles. Circular needles can also be used for basic knitting if holding straight needles for any length of time is a problem or you are working on a weighty project.

Double point needles: Are straight needles with points at both ends and are used to knit in the round.

Knitting Needle Materials:

Plastic needles: Are smooth and flexible and generally the least expensive choice.

Metal needles: May be made of aluminium, steel or nickel-plated brass. These needles are strong and rigid and their surface is very smooth making them suitable for all types of yarn.

Bamboo needles: Are warm to the touch and have a smooth finish suitable for all types of yarn.
